DesigN
Design and storytelling go hand in hand. Layouts, color palettes, and typography serve as silent yet powerful forces, guiding the audience’s emotions and understanding in ways words alone cannot. On the business side of storytelling, design extends its influence, shaping everything from logos to social media and weaving a cohesive visual identity that strengthens our brand’s message. In the same way that design is integral and ever-present in journalism, I am confident that my attention to design is seen throughout this portfolio, from class presentations to news videos and Instagram posts to logos. Even so, below, I have outlined four key design initiatives that I have championed.
1
redesigning website header
2
uniforming brand color
The sad truth is that just two years ago, my high school's journalism department was dying. Nevertheless, with the end of pandemic restrictions and the arrival of a new advisor, a transformation began; a rebirth of the newspaper was on the horizon. What better way to mark this new chapter than with a refreshed website header that reflects our commitment to revitalizing the publication?

Dowling Catholic High School is home of the Maroons, the hex code #800000 maroon, to be exact. From the drop cap in articles to all of the News Media logos, I have matched every use of the color maroon in our work to the official color of our school.

building interview hub
On Fridays, @dowlingcatholicpost releases a "Friday Feature" Instagram post. In these posts, we celebrate each staff member, and while every staff member brings their unique voice to News Media, the consistent design template ensures that our celebrations remain cohesive and polished, maintaining a professional and recognizable visual identity.
Our newsroom home is room #609 at the end of the English hallway, but room #609 is also yearbook's home, Female Voices in Literature's home, and Humanity's home. Our shared classroom left the News Media team without a home for interviews, relying on loud, uninspiring environments like hallways or the cafeteria to conduct article, video, or podcast interviews. Now, thanks to some old newspaper, glue, and repurposed PVC pipes, we have our own interview corner.
