Photojournalism
We all know it: "A picture is worth a thousand words." There is no doubt that photojournalism is a remarkable form of storytelling, but despite my deep appreciation for the art, I also realize that my calling lies more in writing and leading than in taking photos. Fortunately, I have a team of talented photographers who answer the call, bringing visual storytelling to life. Still, there was a missing piece, an untapped opportunity. Our coverage lacked sports photography. Then, I began to spot a student, camera in hand at every game, capturing action on the field. His work began to surface on Instagram, and it was evident that he had both the skill and passion to elevate our sports coverage. One evening at a game, I decided to introduce myself to this photographer, a stranger at the time, and invited him to contribute his talents to News Media. His response was immediate and filled with excitement. I knew then we were about to add a crucial dimension to our storytelling. My photojournalism may be limited, but I knew the importance of recognizing and nurturing talent to create a strong journalism department, where each of us bring our own skills.
